Five Tips for Choosing a Wedding Cake your Obsessed with

If you're here - congratulations, you're engaged or you've just been put in charge of the wedding cake congratulations too, in my biased opinion, this is the best part!

Deciding on a wedding cake can be difficult, there are so many different things to think about; textured or smooth; colourful or white; topper or no topper; what flavour; themed or plain; what design do we want? I know what you're thinking.. 'oh my, where do we start, do we even bother having one?! The answer to that second part; um of course- its cake!

Well here I've tried to make it a little more simple for you where I've put together five of my tips to help you with your decisions to choose a wedding cake you're obsessed with.

One. Flavours...

Yes I said flavours (plural) because you don't have to stick to just one cake flavour. If your having two tiers, choose two flavours or three tiers, choose 3 flavours. I recommend choosing one flavour that you love and thats a bit more 'safe' that you think most people would enjoy (e.g chocolate cake with raspberry filling and vanilla bean frosting - who doesn't love chocolate). Then choose one or two flavours that are little different and that you really like. For example last year I made a wedding cake for a couple who LOVED mint chocolate chip trumpets so we created something to resemble and taste just like that.

The best way to decide what flavours you like is to have a tasting or consultation with your cake designer to help decide what you would like to have in your wedding cake.

See Floss Cakery's Menu for flavour inspiration and Contact Floss for a consultation with the cake designer.

Two. Flowers...

Flowers are such a beautiful way to tie everything in - the bouquets from the ceremony can match the cake or the flowers in the reception could match the cake. Or simply choose your favourite flowers to make an appearance on your day.

My recommendation would be to choose up to 3 types of flowers to keep it simple and not over crowd the cake.

Remember you want your wedding cake to reflect you both as a couple so if flowers aren't your thing don't feel pressured to have them on a cake. There are plenty of other ways like texture and toppers that you can add style and your personal touch to your cake.

Three. Textures...

Texture is a really cool way to add style to your wedding cake but can also make it look very classy if you would prefer that. Having fun with textures can make your cake stand out from other cakes and give the wow factor! Textures can be done using flowers, gold leaf, chocolate drips and many more. The outside frosting of the cake is a great way to show texture by having a non smooth look giving depth or have a smooth semi naked look, showing the texture of the actual cake through the frosting.

Four. Toppers...

Cake toppers are one of the best ways to add your personality to the cake. A cake topper is a usually wooden or acrylic piece that is inserted into the top of the cake for aesthetics/ decoration only. Have your last name, initials, 'Mr & Mr', wedding date or even your favourite word on top of your cake. Its a beautiful way to complete the cake and round it all out as something truly unique to you and your future spouse for your special day.

Five. Keep it Simple...

Yes its a day you will never forget but try not to go over board with your cake design. When do your research choose two - three designs/ styles you really like and ask your cake designer to merge them. This way you'll have something you both like and something unique to you.
